Full recap
Spoilers for Pilot below. Written by us from the episode itself; character names follow the official credits.
A princess in a tower
The pilot opens as a fairy tale told by Guinevere herself: a princess locked in a tower by creatures who "run on blood and fear". The picture underneath is much darker. A young Olivia Park keeps the android Gwen opened up on a bed and keeps "fixing" her, which looks a lot more like torture than repair.
Olivia's father Orville interrupts to give her a birthday present: Park Planet, a whole theme park floating in the clouds, built so that everyone who visits will be under Olivia's "watchful care". When Olivia drags Gwen to the balcony to admire it, Gwen sees her chance, runs and dives over the edge. Olivia simply tells her panicking father that Gwen will come back.
Frankie, Andi and the world below
A montage shows Park Planet's rise and slow decline as Gwen is copied into plushies, costumes and countless android versions. Two little girls from the slums, Francesca and Andrea, sneak into the park, fail to win a Gwen plush and then meet a real Guinevere — Francesca even fixes the android's twitching finger.
Years later, Frankie salvages scrap on Sparky's boat and works factory shifts, while Andi is a junior Park engineer, resented below as a "crownie". In a net of junk Frankie spots an eye: a broken Guinevere of a model neither of them recognises. Sparky wants to sell it for parts. Up in the tower, an old, bedridden Olivia learns that traces of Gwen have turned up and sends one of two enormous robots to bring her back.
The break-in
Andi is fired from the labs that same day. Frankie, egged on by little hallucinated critters, convinces her to sneak the android into the lower labs and use a repair halo. Sparky catches them on the way. After a scuffle, Andi turns his electric rod on him and the two strike a deal: they repair Gwen, and Sparky gets to sell a working unit for far more money.
In the abandoned lower labs the android suddenly screams a warning, and the giant robot attacks with a huge sword. Both women are knocked out. Frankie comes to in Gwen's arms; Gwen asks whether the robot is their "parent or guardian", decides it is a threat and sends them into the elevator. Through the glass they see blood splatter. Gwen walks in, collapses — and the robot is dead.
They get her into the repair halo. Error messages pleading for help flash past before the system reboots to a bright rainbow sky, and Gwen, seeing Frankie and Andi as children, says it is nice to see them again.
Questions it leaves open
- Why is this Gwen an older model nobody recognises?
- What did Olivia mean by promising to "do better this time"?
- Why did the man in the slums cough up blue blood?
- Does Gwen really remember meeting Frankie and Andi as kids?
Our take on these lives on the lore & theories page, clearly separated from confirmed facts.
